A SUPER-indendent!

Well, today was a day of appointments. I had an ortho this morning at 915 where I found out that my teeth have suffered some 'relapse' since my last surgery. Seems as though my back right teeth don't connect like they did after surgery but if you want me to tell you the truth, I'm gonna say "I don't really care!" Ha! I am tired of braces. 3 1/2 years is a long time and I ready to get them off. Pronto!
Anyhow, moving on, I had a meeting with the Vice Principle of Sydney's school today at 10:30 to discuss the incident in the heat yesterday. Here's the just of it. The P.E. teacher made Sydney run the mile when it was 105 degrees (it was 100 when she ran) and then deny the kids rest after the exertion. The P.E. teacher, when asked, said it was 80 degrees when they ran (it wasn't and I brought hour by hour proof to show the Vice Principle). The P.E. teacher then stated that she discussed the heat over with the office staff and they decided it was fine to continue witht eh running the mile. (Note: the Principle and the Vice Principle were off campus. So 'office staff' means who? Secretaries?)
AH. NO.
Did you know there was a heat advisory for our part of the state yesterday? From the National Weather Service. And it clearly stated that children and the Elderly should take extreme caution in the heat and avoid exertion.
So again, I say...
AH. NO.
No one should put my child at risk, because they 'felt' it was fine. Or due to the fact that they checked a website with faulty information.
WHERE ARE THE GUIDELINES PEOPLE?
Well, that is the million dollar question. The district has no guidelines. Each school is to fend for itself. Make up its own mind. So, I asked, what are the school guidelines? And the VP told me that they did not have any. But then proceeded to explain due to our mild temperatures, they just haven't put time into creating any. Well, I understand our climate is usually mild, but not always. Our heat wave of over 100 hit in June of 2008, when Jack was born. Then it was over 100 in late August last year when Sydney did Jamboree. This year, it is in late September. But we always get a week or so of it. And the school needs guidelines for activity in extreme heat.
Period.
So, I let the VP know I was going to be making an appt with the District Administration, to discuss the matter. And I did. I went to the District office around 11:30 to make an appt but was asked to have a seat. And a few minutes later I found myself in a one on one meeting with the District Superintendent.
He was awesome.
He listen intently as I described my concerns and the district shortcomings. He was grateful as I presented him with multiple copies of other district extreme heat guidelines. School Districts in California, Washington, Georgia, Florida, Arizona who have addressed this matter and created clear cut procedures that each school principle and staff would follow to protect the kids.
Mr. Bush was awesome.
I was totally appreciative that he was willing to listen and then work to start the ball rolling in creating protocol in our district so no child is placed in danger again.
So, that's how it ended. I am to call back mid month and touch base to see how the process is going as he meets with the school nurse and the school district attorneys.
So, I love a happy ending.
I wish all things I encountered could be wrapped up to quickly!
