Well, this morning we sliced up some strawberries for Jack and put them on his tray. I guess one wasn't cut small enough, because as he put shoved all those berry tidbits into his mouth one got stuck.
I hate moments like those. They are so scary. Jack got that look on his face. You know the one where something is wrong but he can't get the cry out. So scary. Adam and I reacted fast. We whipped him out of his highchair and stuck my fingers in his mouth to see if I could help him. I pulled all the berry tidbits out but the main piece was stuck in his throat.I quickly flipped Jack over and started whacking him on the back. Like I said so scary. He was able to cry a bit, but not much. I did a finger sweep but that darn berry was stuck and I couldn't push it down and I couldn't pull it up!
So we flipped our little man again, head down, and gave the solid downward blows to his back. On the next finger sweep I got that darn strawberry and pulled it out. Along with a ton of blood. And Jack started screaming. THANK GOODNESS! Screaming means air!
I guess while I was finger sweeping my fingernails must have cut is mouth somewhere because there was a ton of blood, but it clotted pretty quickly.I'll say it again! I hate moments like this. My poor little guy. He was traumatized. For a long time after that he just wanted to be cuddled and held tightly. Which was totally fine with me because I spent the next hour thanking God for sparing our child and unlodging that berry.
Adam and I are sooo thankful we took that Infant First Aid and CPR class last year when we were pregnant. Do you know people made fun of us for taking that class? But today, once again it proved invaluable. We knew exactly what to do and did waste a moment. I am positive that flipping Jack upside down and giving those firm thrusts made all the difference in loosening that strawberry. That class was also a lifesaver when Jack was born and turned blue all the time. Remember those times? So scary.
When you have a moment you should really click on this link, The American Red Cross, and find out all about first aid and CPR classes in your area. It really could save a life of a loved one!
